Chilling and likely even more insidious than I've stated. This is a simplification and sorta obvious, but constructs sold as "bigger than ourselves" are actively used to manipulate people to act against their self interest, or even the collective best interest...such as engaged, vibrant, creative, peaceful communities.
At the same time, I believe strongly that some things are worth sacrificing for the collective good. It seems like a paradox, but I think it is more about the subtlety of truth. A concept that is generally bad politics.

Amen indeed. Maybe confusion machine or fog of war machine is more appropriate than "insanity machine"...but they're all part of the same mechanism.
